When we first opened our salons, pricing wasn’t at the top of our minds. We just wanted to do great work, help people feel their best, and create a space where clients felt seen and valued.
Our passion was huge, but our confidence with money? Not so much.
We priced based on emotion. Sometimes it was what we thought people could afford. Other times, it was what the salon down the street was charging. Often, it depended on how we felt about ourselves that day. We undercharged. We gave away time and product without charging for it. We said “yes” when we should’ve paused and checked the cost first.
In the beginning, it felt generous. Over time, it became draining.
We were booked solid but not truly profitable. We were giving everything and still asking ourselves, “Am I even worth the price I want to charge?”
The more we doubted our value, the more stuck we felt.
Eventually, we had to face the truth.
If we wanted to run real businesses, ones that could grow, support us, and last, we had to stop letting emotions drive our pricing. We had to start thinking like business owners, not just service providers.
That meant learning how pricing actually works.
We sat down and looked at the numbers: our time, our overheads, the cost of every product used, our level of experience, and our income goals.
We started asking better questions:
What does this service really cost me?
What do I need to earn per hour to thrive?
What’s right for my business, not someone else’s?
We stopped comparing ourselves to others. We stopped apologizing. And we let go of the idea that charging more made us greedy.
It made us responsible.
When we shifted to pricing based on logic, not guilt, not fear, not emotion, everything got clearer.
We had more confidence. We had a steadier income. And, maybe most surprisingly, our clients respected it. Because when you value your own time and expertise, others do too.
Here’s what we know for sure now: pricing isn’t a feeling. It’s a strategy.
Passion is powerful, but it doesn’t pay the bills. Profit does.
Your time, training, and talent matter. Charge in a way that reflects that.
Trying to match other salons won’t make you competitive if it pushes you into burnout.
And when your pricing is rooted in truth, in your costs, your goals, your value, you don’t need to defend it.
You can stand behind it with clarity and confidence.
We’re not saying this shift is always easy. But it is necessary.
Because emotional pricing leaves you tired. Strategic pricing sets you free.
You can still care deeply about your clients and your craft. You can still lead with heart.
Just be sure you lead with strategy, too.
That’s how we turned things around. And it’s the foundation of what we teach through FOCUS every day.
You deserve to be paid well for the work you love.
Let’s stop guessing.
Let’s start pricing like we mean it.
Let’s FOCUS on profit that feels good, and makes sense.
